Abstract

Dendritic cells (DC) arc specialized to regulate immune responses by capturing, processing, and presenting antigens to T cells. We have previously shown that the number of DC in peripheral blood of B bell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients is reduced already at diagnosis when compared to age matched controls. Here we show that blood DC from CLL patients have a diminished antigen uptake capacity and a reduced antigen accumulation rate as well as an impaired cluster formation already at earliest disease stage. Understanding the mechanisms underlying blood DC deficiency early in this hematologic malignancy should help to better understand the role of DC defects during carcinogenesis.
